Choosing where to live and schools

Hello!
Looks like our family will be moving south in the July timeframe and we are wondering about how to deal with schools while we are looking for a home. We intend to live in one of two places on the North Island, but obviously can't enroll the kids in school until we've nailed down where we will be living. Is there any requirement to have them in a school as soon as they arrive or not until we've secured a home? Seems like common sense would say that we need to worry about where we are living and then get them in school, but it's always best to find out and not get in trouble shortly after arriving!

Thanks!
