A Clockwork Future

Greetings all!

I am a father and husband, about to turn 30. Married 9 years and have two boys, 4 and 1. I am a disabled veteran and stay at home dad and damn proud of it. I don't require medicines or treatment so VA benefits aren't a concern for me.

My wife is roughly 10 years from retirement and after many years of research, we have settled on Panama. Over the next decade we plan to make periodic trips to Panama and hopefully meet up with locals and get a feel for the areas and lifestyle. The areas that we have eyed are Boquete, David and La Barqueta. Pretty much that whole stretch seems like a nice area. We have no preference but I honestly think the wife would die for a home on the coast.

By the time she retires we'll be in our early 40's, have a fully loaded IRA, 350k+ in liquid savings, and be pulling in a retirement income of around 2700-3000 per month. From what I know we can find a house/condo and live well. We live below our means now and will continue to do so in the future.

On top of visiting (hopefully once per year) over the next decade, we plan to rent for a full year after retiring before we even think of committing to buying a house. It is a huge thing and we have to make sure it is the right thing. My sons will be teenagers by then so this should be....interesting.

You are probably thinking...great, 10 years away...who cares? Well, I would love to learn as much as I can, talk to as many people as I can and make friends. I think it would be great if I end up making friends and meet up with them in Panama during a trip.

We understand life is different, unexpected, slower and it should be, it is an adventure. I don't need everything to be a clone of what I have in the states. That is boring. Give me a good book, good drinks and good friends and that is all I need.
