Message for U.S. Citizens: Changes in Processing of Federal Benefits

Due to the recent Supreme Court decision on Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, there have been changes in the processing of federal benefits.

The U.S. Embassy in Panama invites you to visit the following websites for information about these changes:

To learn more about Social Security changes, please visit http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pressoffice/pr/doma-statement-pr.html or www.socialsecurity.gov

To learn more about Office of Personnel Management changes, please visit https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2013/08/02/2013-18665/civil-service-retirement-system-and-federal-employees-retirement-system-opportunity-for-annuitants or www.opm.gov

Regularly monitor the State Department's website at http://travel.state.gov, where you can find current Travel Warnings, (including Travel Warnings for Panama), Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Panama enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov/step. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

For Country Specific Information for Panama visit http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_994.html

For updated information on the security situation in Panama, please contact the American Citizen Services Unit of the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy at (011)-507-317-5030. The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy is located in Clayton, Building 783, in the Clayton section of Panama. The Embassy web site is http://panama.usembassy.gov/.
