Covid vaccination in Panama

This is a public service posting about how to get a Covid vaccination in Panama. Anti-vaxxers, and Covid-deniers please refrain from posting here. Start your own post about your beliefs.

In the early hours of Wednesday, January 20, Panama received its first doses of Pfizer vaccine to great fanfare, with the President, Ministers and other officials in attendance. Although much less than the amount initially promised due to production problems at their Belgium factory, Pfizer announced it will deliver the remainder of the missing doses in weekly batches beginning on February 15. Panama also has contracted with AstraZeneca and Johnson&Johnson to purchase vaccines.

The first doses were given on January 20 to health care workers in direct contact with Covid patients.

Panama has a very detailed roll-out plan for delivering and administering the vaccines at over 1,000 vaccination centres. In Phase 1 of 4, healthcare and other front-line workers will be vaccinated at their place of work. Phase 2, projected to begin in April, will be for adults over the age of 60, Phase 3 for those living in remote areas and on indigenous reserves, and Phase 4, all other adults. Pregnant women, children under age 16, and those with certain auto-immune diseases won’t be included. See the MINSA website for full details of the roll-out plan.

Panama’s vaccination program is non-obligatory, and free for all residents, including foreigners.

If you wish to be vaccinated, you should register at a government website, either on your computer or your smart phone, and will be notified when it is your turn. You fill in your DOB, cedula number and answer a few questions about your health status. It takes a couple minutes. To date over 350,000 people have signed up. The government is working on how to register those without a cedula.

The government has also set up a “Vacunometro” or vaccination meter that gives the number of vaccinations given, and where, all in real time.

Good luck to all those wishing to be vaccinated!
