Food in Volcan/Cerro Punta

One advantage of the area where I live is that here in in the Municipal of Tierras Altas they grow most of the vegetables for the whole country of Panama. A little above Volcan on the road to Cerro Punta you find a lot of wholesale venders. Today I bought a 50 lb bag of potatoes, 25 lbs of onions, 5 lbs of carrots, 2 lbs of peppers, one head of green cabbage, one head of purple cabbage and a very large head of lettuce for a total of 26 dollars. In addition to being very reasonable in price the produce is very fresh and is available year around with no need of having anything shipped in from other locations. In addition to locally produced fruits and vegetables we are in the center of Panama's dairy industry plus we have grass fed beef. Down in the tropical lowlands also in Chiriqui lots of rice is grown. And of course coffee including gourmet coffee from the higher elevations. Chiriqui even has it's own brand of beer brewed in our province (Cristal). To me living in an area that produces lots of food is an advantage especially considering some of the problems in the world today. Cheap and abundant food locally grown is definitely a plus. In many places of the world food is shipped in from long distances away. In times of turmoil this could become a problem.
