Cagayan de oro - Is It Safe to Visit?

Hi,

I am an english guy of 40, and I wish to visit Cagayan de oro, which is in Mindineo I am wondering if it is safe to go there. I seem to get conflicting advice. Philippinos say it is OK, but official Gov sites say not.

Is there a expat resident on line here who can really tell me the score?
