A Car for the Philippines

Hi all! My family will be relocating to PH (Manila) in several months for work (at least 3 years) and could use some advice.
My company will ship our car for us - we'd like to bring a car to explore the country on our own and figure that in the long run driving a newer vehicle with airbags and such is safer than taking taxis/buses everywhere. We've traveled a lot in Asia and from what I've heard & read driving in Manila/rural PH doens't sound any different from what I've seen elsewhere (kinda crazy).

We're in between cars and are debating what kind of car we should bring - I'd love to hear other people's experiences with auto's they've brought over.

In particular we're debating:
- getting an older car, expecting it to get destroyed by regular fender-benders or getting a newer vehicle we could return with in 3 years and still get a good trade-in value
- 2WD vs. AWD/4x4 - just how bad are the roads?

Any insights/suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!
