Driving in the Philippines

If you observe many wealthy people do not drive themselves. They have drivers. One reason people have a driver is because if they ever get into a serious accident they are not liable. The driver is the one who gets in trouble. I use to drive over a 1000 miles a month in Metro Manila. I hardly ever stopped for police. I'd make believe I didn't see them. Most of the time they just let you go because they were too lazy to chase you. No radios to call ahead. If you stop, you have to pay something. If you drive away, they either don't chase you or if they do, you eventually stop, apologize and then pay. Nothing to lose. If you are ever in a bad accident an a Filipino is injured, get out of there, call your Embassy who will have an assigned Attorney help you or if you have a good Attorney friend call them to handle the situation. Once you are in their custody they can do or ask for anything they want. I was once in a bad motorcycle accident. A pedestrian ran off the sidewalk right in front of my bike. I had a good quality helmet on, my head hit the ground. The guy spun around hit his head and was unconscious. Eventually went into a coma. I gathered up my damaged bike bleeding quite a bit and slowly rode away. It eventually cost me quite a bit of money even though it wasn't my fault. If I would have stayed, I would have been jailed for who knows how long and it would have cost me a lot more.
