immigrant receiving means tested benefits in USA.

Hi all, my wife, a Filipina naturalized USA citizen petitioned both her parents to come here. Upon landing in California, (and not yet to their final destination) her dad needed some medical care at a hospital. Through a well intended, but ignorant of USA immigration laws, a relative of his signed him up for Medi- cal (means tested) to pay the hospital bills. I understand that as a sponsor, the USA government can/will send the medical bills to me to pay, and even will sue me if needed to recover the money. Does anybody know how likely this is to happen? Any other information that I could use in this matter is also greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Ron
