US Immigration questions ??

I am a US citizen and have been to Philippines twice in the last 6 months to visit my girlfriend. I am 54 years old and have a stable job etc....blah blah. The last time I came back through airport immigration the officer asked me if I was visiting a girlfriend. I said "just friends". I am just curious what would happen if I had said yes I was visiting my girlfriend. Anyone ever asked this question when coming home from abroad?
