Interacting with the Locals

Just curious to know how expats interact with the locals (ie.: store clerks, market vendors, security guards, people on the streets, neighbors, etc...) Do you humor them? Do you deal with them in business-like manner? Does one have to be passive or agressive or demanding? Does one have to smile at them? I know these interactions are universal in any country; but I just want to know the particulars between an expat and Filipinos. Thanks.
