Thought I would share this story.
I friend of mine in the states was recently scammed out of $1,800 USD. How did this happen you wonder (even if you don't I'll press on).
My friend is recently divorced so he was looking for a bit of companionship so he joined Fling.com which is a hook up site. A lot of the women on the site are really just wanting to hook up with a guy and from what he has told me they usually only use the site to converse with each other.
The 'other' women on the site are drop dead gorgeous. These women when he contacted them all wanted to chat via text, which I thought was a bit odd. Most people on the site from what he said all want to keep their numbers private until the do decide to hook up. Anyway, he contacted a girl who was going to stay with him for a month. The catch was he had to get a security number which costed him $100, then he was asked to pay anther fee for something (I forgot what), but this was $300. To have the girl actually be able to stay with him for a month he was then told it was another $1,300.
All of the money was sent via Western Union to the Philippines. He didn't tell me where he was sending the cash until the $1,300. I did tell him not to send it and just right off the initial $400, but he really wanted this "girl" to stay at his house for a month.
Needless to say, he did send the money, sent the person a text that the cash was sent and never heard another word from them.
These scams happen a lot and I think he learned his lesson, I hope, but we shall see. Sending cash via Western Union to an unknown person promising anything after the money is sent is probably a scam - IMO.
Just thought I would share my friend's misfortune, he's bummed, but a little bit wiser.
