Booking a flight

Hi guys, I am sure I sound very naïve about all this - that is because I have never done it before. Just trying to book a round trip flight to the phils from Minneapolis airport. Most flights have two stops, my dollar range is 1500-2000 USD. Any tips on what to look for and what to avoid? Thanks for any advice you can give.
Oh, my gf in manila is booking the hotel and a weekend in boracay for us. I'll refund her for the boracay reservations. I'm looking to spend 4/13-4/21 in the phils. Thanks, Mark
