How safe is it in Manila?

My Caucasian husband and I are moving to Manila in about two months. I'm Filipino and and fluent in the local language but have spent all my life in Canada.

For those already living in Manila now - how have you found safety there? Have you had issues? Would love to hear your stories.

Not concerned so much for me as I am for my husband who doesn't speak the local language. This drug cleanup business which the media constantly reports on where supposedly innocent people are getting killed has me spooked. I wonder if expats have been spared from all this for now.
