moving to Tacloban

Hey all,
Wifey, little fella and i are intending to move to Phils (i.e. Tacloban) somewhere next year. As an extremely paranoid father, i am so concerned with regards to safety especially that everywhere we go, we stand out (wifey very dark tiny Davao girl, cute little "half-half" and a quite large, bearded european). Now i am not talking about death threats, as i know Tacloban is among the most laid back cities, but pick-pocketer and house burglars...
How is life there? how expensive is it? We are a simple family and trying to integrate in the normal day-to-day life of Philipino culture, therefore i was wondering how much monthly income would a family of 3 need, provided that we don't pay rent.
