Since the results of the international testing system came in with results at the bottom, I've been thinking what can be done to turn this around. Kids just aren't learning enough to be competitive. As an example, my wife has a "bachelors degree" but she couldn't tell you how many planets there are or name the continents.

So I'm thinking of ways to address not the symptoms but rather root causes. Obviously there isn't money to throw at the problem and I don't think money would fix it anyway although some money is needed.

First, get food in the schools so children can learn. They have a program like this but it doesn't cover all the schools. Hungry kids can't learn.

Second, all children should read one book a week and this should be recommend and encouraged from the national level on down. I mean real books, not electronic devices. All schools should have a library which will cost money but they can't afford to not spend here. Reading comprehension opens the door to all other learning. If they can read they can learn science, history, and all others. My mother read to me throughout my early childhood and it opened doors to the world.

Finally, I don't know what I can do to help in these matters although I would like to.
