To Learn the Local Language or Not?

Not fluent in Tagalog; but I've learned a few phrases - "Magkano po ito?" (How much is this?). "Wala na pong tawad?" (Is there any discount?). 90% of the time the vendor will give me a discount. Of course this occurs mostly in public markets and not in supermarets or grocery stores. And I thank them ("Salamat po") after every transaction. I think it gives the Filipinos joy and a bit of acceptance once a foreigner tries his best to speak their native language. At least "you got your one foot inside the door" once you learn the local language. Just my 2 cents....
