My Filipina partner and I live in Bangkok on Soi 24 in the shadow of the Emporium. We love how WALKABLE the neighborhood is where the gym, high-quality grocery and all of our favorite salons are close by. No need to drive anywhere but the airport from time to time. We plan to find a beach or mountain environment after I retire in around five years. (We need more nature in our lives!) Most likely we will land in the Philippines, but we are open-minded. Here is our ultimate wishlist:
1. availability of oceanview/lakeview/mountainview condos
2. building security
3. extremely low crime rate
4. great gym nearby
5. international airport
6. hospital nearby
7. walkable neighborhood with cafes and nice vibe
8. quality groceries available
9. proximity to urban center or local activities
10. College-town feel a plus
No place will offer everything we seek, but there are a couple of places that have charmed us and felt like a completely walkable "ecosystem".:
-- Bulabog Beach in Boracay...
-- The Laguna area near Villa Market...
We think there must surely be other walkable neighborhoods as well. We will explore Baguio, Da Nang, Ubud, Penang and Kota Kinabalu to find the "Goldilocks" neighborhood that feels just right. Would LOVE more ideas in the Philippines! Perhaps a lot to ask, but humble, open-minded and ready to compromise! Thanks so much for any advice.
