Expat taxes with a filipina spouse

Has anyone on here filed taxes with a Filipina spouse?

I'm getting conflicting information. H&R Block told me that if I file married filing separately my wife doesn't need an SSN or ITIN and I can file electronically. But another source, 1040.com, an on-line filing service, said I have to get her an ITIN whether I file jointly or separately.

Assuming I need to get her an ITIN, how do I go about getting one? I understand there's a form W-7 but the instructions are confusing. I'm going to knuckle down and read them carefully, but ... does anyone have any experience with this who can just tell me?
