Desire to Retire in Portugal

Hi All,
I am a 72 year old retiree living in the US. I really am strongly thinking of retiring in Portugal. I have read some of the comments from others on this forum, and they have been quite helpful. I won't begin this process until the pandemic is either under control or ends.

Susan Korthase has a very informative article that I will certainly use as a reference.

I looked at all the documentation needed in Ms. Korthase's article. I have some questions, and if you have the time to answer, I appreciate that.

Question 1: The San Francisco Portuguese consulate, which covers my area of the country, requires a financial guarantor even with all the paperwork I can provide. Does that mean that I need to contact someone in Portugal to be a guarantor?

Question 2: I need health insurance with 0 deductible to get the visa. Is it true that since I am in my 70's, it would be impossible to get private insurance within Portugal? Would I need to get BUPA or Cigna International insurance?

Question 3: I need to show proof that I will have accommodation guaranteed for 6 months. Would I be able to rent a very cheap room for 6 months, but then after I arrive there, rent a much nicer place. Is that possible? The consulate in San Francisco requires 6 months.

I will have more questions later. Thank you if you can answer any of these.

Thank you again
