A place to call a 'home'

Where's a place to stay which is reasonably urban but feels rural? Where's a smaller town close by train or car to bigger cities? Where's a place to rent which is reasonably private and away from the hurly-burly of everyday life yet close enough to slip back into it as needed? Culture--music, dance, theatre, and good national food. These are important. Heck, we're after the perfect place---laid back and yet vital. I was a teacher who taught in a small, rural school and for both of us the joy of having kids around to make a place feel warm and alive, that's really important. Also, one where we can feel as if we can develop a sense of community, of being part of a society not our own. That is essential. We like North American folk but are certainly not desperate to simply hang around ex-pats. There is much to learn about living within a different country.
Yeah, and because we're in our early 70's. what's the deal with medical. We're healthy but not immortal that's for certain.
Finally, while we certainly appreciate blue skies and warm days, since we're Canadian a sense of passing seasons is more than welcome.
