Hello my wife and I were still researching in relocating to Portugal from the US, when we found our home! Since she is a Portuguese citizen and I have an European citizenship, our finances saved and in order, we acted on it, did all the precautions one would, could and happy with the decision.
Now the legal part that untangling a lot of things earlier as we put the “carriage in front of the horse” in some aspects, that I’ve not been able to get a clear information, even if she is a citizen, we have 10 days to change addresses in financas, hers was easy, now mine must go through AIMA which is a nightmare due to backlogs, advised to require a lawyer, We don’t have the intent to migrate this year, but the following. The property is will be a habitual residence. Looks like a change of address is prompting more than that, like tax residency. We want to ensure don’t tigger tax residency earlier as we intend to apply with the IFICI for tax reasons, for early next year.
Questions: Would my wife change of address only suffice? As an European citizen does the change of address through AIMA for manifestacao de interesse, smooth? (clpl will not qualify) Without the need to go to the backlog of residency applications?
And anyone recommends a lawyer specialized in the transition from US to Portugal aiding with the IFICI application and future tax implications considerations with remote work? Many thanks in advance!
