living outside compound, Yanbu

I was just informed that I will not be housed in a compound. We will ask if it will be possibly but there is a good chance that we won't. I believe there is a very long waiting list. I am concerned for my safety and sanity. How would I be able to meet other expats if not in a compound. Will I be able to move about to find circle of support. Will I be able to do things to entertain my infant and myself? What is life like as a female living in Yanbu when not in a compound? Is there another way to speak to other expats? Any help would be appreciated.
