Should I stay in a compound or not?

I am a single male, be starting in Riyadh in the New Year and working close to the Holiday Inn at Izdahar. My question is this;
Should I stay in a compound or live in the city?
Has someone compiled a map with the compounds on so as to see location and distance etc?
Can anyone who has gone from outside compound to inside or the other way give their experience please
