Driving vs public transport for wheelchair users

As a wheelchair user, how easy or accessible is using public transport around the cities and in the outer suburbs. Here in Melbourne I live 2hrs away from the city and can access all the forms of transport for less than £3. I don't have the ability to drive, although sometimes I use a walker but the wheelchair is best when you're outside for longer.
What's it like getting around on an average day?
Here it is common to drive an hour to get anywhere, you'd need to drive 6-10 hours to reach the coast east or west, I understand that would be like driving to Brighton over there!
Cheers
