best place to live in Singapore?

Hi, I know there will be a range of views on this one - I'm considering a job in Singapore and am researching potential places/lifestyle that would suite my wife & I. I guess a split between an old colonial in Chinatown (if such a thing exists) or something near the beach with a bit of space - any guidance appreciated!
