Housing in Singapore and thereabouts

Seems most of the housing on this tiny, overcrowded island is in apartment-living. Our family is so accustomed to living in a house that we would prefer it. Maybe we have nothing to worry about -- and our US attitude about privacy is not in either danger, or will fall by the wayside to appreciate the close proximity of others.

I will be relocating my business and small children (8, 4, 2, and 1) and ideally we would like to live on an island, and either commute or, again, a house. What's the deal?
