George Washington Preschool has recently opened its doors for registration! It's a new school located at Turf club road at the Grandstand. The school adopts the well researched Highscope teaching approach in which children are encouraged to learn through discovery, using their sensory system. Our school is very unique in the sens that each classroom is set up with a theme in mind. The school consists of 4 classrooms: Science and discovery room, literacy and communications room, Speech and drama room, and a Math/problem solving room. In addition we also have a construction area where the children can build with blocks and other materials, a kitchen area for cooking and other scientific experiments and a separate indoor playground for the children to run off any excess energy. We've also been blessed with the amazing fields present at the Turf Club to which we can bring the children outdoors for exploration and activities.
I myself grew up in Singapore as an expat, I have always attended international schools and have worked in different schools in Singapore.
I must admit, I am proud to be a teacher at George Washington Preschool, I have seen other systems and when I read about the Highscope teaching approach I was very impressed. Coming from a background of teaching children with learning difficulties I cannot stress how beneficial it is when children learn through their sensory system. You can read how to ride a bike till you're blue in the face but until you hop on and experience it, that is when you truly learn how to ride the bike. You are less likely to forget something you have done as opposed to something you have read or heard.
The natural curiosity motivates them to WANT to discover and learn new things rather than the traditional approach where teachers dictate lessons and bombard information at the students regardless of whether it is being received. Children learn to play, and they play to learn, and that it our motto, at this school it is our duty NOT to dictate and direct or lead the learning but rather guide and facilitate the children's discoveries. At such a young age, these preschoolers are like sponges, soaking up the world surrounding them and what better way than to taste, smell, touch, hear and see the world around you.
The school term begins in August but we are running discovery and summer holiday classes in the meantime. Our doors our open so drop by, have a snoop around, grill us with questions, cause your child deserves the best education this country has to offer!
