I'm super excited but freaking out a bit. Last year my husband spent 3 months working in SA and has been raving about it ever since. He is graduating in May a phd in chemistry and his best job offer so far is a post doctorate postion (18-24 months) in Pretoria. We are weighing if this is the right move for us. I have spent days researching.
Without added sensationalism, I'd like some realistic input.
First off...
we have a 9 month old boy, so all the safety concerns come first, followed by healthcare and financial viability-- specifically, what type of income would be necessary for the 3 of us to be "comfortable" in SA?
We are African American so what considerations should I keep in mind about racism or xenophia coming from the US... specifically in Pretoria.
We live right outside of Philadelphia and if you just watched our local news, you would think it's really dangerous here. I'm having a hard time trying to gauge how dangerous it REALLY is.
Any feedback is appreciated.
