Advice on Relocation?

Hi all. I am a US citizen, and am considering relocating to South Africa. I have lived overseas a good bit, and I usually enjoy a good adventure. I have a decent income from a disability pension (and a pretty good limp). I prefer to live in the countryside, if it is safe. My SA friends recommended looking into one of the smaller towns around Capetown. Are the smaller towns up in the mountains safe and secure, maybe around Franschoek, or Villiersdorp? (I enjoy the mountains.)
