Pets in Madrid

Hi,
I'm moving to Madrid in August for 6 mos to a year and would love to take my German Shorthaired Pointer with me. Although I hope to rent my own place, my family there doesn't think it's a good idea to take or to have a pet there. Does anyone on this list have a medium-sized dog in Madrid? How friendly or accepting are people towards dogs? What's it like renting an apartment if you have a dog? What's it like to walk the dog on the streets? Are there "dog parks" (large fenced areas where people take their dogs to be off leash)? Are there kennel facilities or people who will care for pets if one wants to go out of town for up to a week? Any other kinds of information on this topic will be welcome. Thank you. Patricia
