Residency with a criminal history

My wife and I are close to retirement and are seriously looking at the
Lugo Province to retire in. We are both highly educated and have more
than adequate means for income without employment when we get there in a
few years. Herein lies a potential problem. I have emailed consulates in
the US and over there without any response but am somewhat relentless.

In 1987 I was convicted of a drug related offense that occured in 1985 in
the US. Due to cooperation with the authorities I received a minimal sentence of four and a half months in a halfway house and a little over a year on probation. Almost immediately in 1987 I began a successful career as a drug counselor, social worker, therapist, administrator and
consultant for various chemical dependency and psychiatric treatment
programs here in the US. I also acquired my second master's degree, an
MSW, in 1990. Since 1987 I have not had so much as a speeding ticket.

Can someone with my history gain residency in Spain. Some of the
information I have received is that the statute on limitations for this type of thing is only five years. What can you tell me or better yet, who
can you refer me to so I can get an answer?
