Looking to buy property then move to Spain

Hi all,
I currently live in the US with my wife but we are seriously considering buying property in Spain next year with the intention to move there in 2-3 years. I understand property prices have gone down significantly in the last few years.
We are looking to buy in the area between Valencia and Alicante, but not in a big city. We debate between a beach apt. or something more rural a few miles inland. Any ideas, suggestions, comments on this? Any other areas that we should consider?
