Visiting Spain in December

I am planning to retire next year, and looking at several places, Spain being one of them. I would like to go to Spain in December (18-Jan 2) and check things out. I would be traveling alone, and would like some help in finding either a private "tour guide", or recommendations where to start my travels...Madrid, Barcelona, etc. I know that's a broad description, but I have to start somewhere! Also, any good news/bad news about retiring in Spain?
