Application to reside

Hello Everyone
We are hoping to move to Mijas this year. We will be retiring but with savings as it will be 3 years before we can receive our pensions. My question is to do with the application to reside. I understand you have to show funds (£2500pm) for 1 year, then 2 years and a further 2 years before applying for permanent residence in Spain. How likely is it that the initial application I.e 1 yr 2 yr etc. Would be refused? We will own our home and be fit and self sufficient so not a burden. Thanks for any advice or own experience. Cat
