Residency for dual citizen: USA and Polish

Hi everyone.
I have lived in the US for just about 30 years holding US citizenship/passport. I am also a Polish citizen with an expired passport (which can be renewed with some formalities).
What would be the preferred way of obtaining residency status in Spain? I plan on moving in in September of this year (2018) with no desire to obtain employment. I am not sure how soon resident's status will become valuable to me but I assume sooner or later it will not only be valuable but also might be required.
Cheers.
Martin
