Thai traditions for marriage

Question -
I'm marrying a Thai lady that lives in the US. She's quite traditional at heart and wants me to make sure that I get her parents permission before marriage.

She's from a small village with very little money. She saids that typically you ask for permission to marry and then you offer a gift of a Cow, Eggs and a knife to the family out of respect and thanks to the parents.

Is this really all that's required.. ?? I mean..can I simply offer a few thousand dollars US or is this an insult ? I certainly want to make sure the parents are taken care of..but at the same time..I don't want to disrespect them in any way.
