I am married to a Thai citizen and am living in Bangkok. We went to our local district office to add me to his house book. Instead of adding me to his book, they gave me a new one of my own. It's yellow to indicate I'm a foreigner.
The next day, the person who was helping us at the district office called to let us know I could come back to get a Thai ID card. Whereas the ID card for Thais is light blue, my ID card is pink to indicate I'm a foreigner.
Having the Thai ID card and house registration book have enabled me to conduct official business easier and quicker since I don't have a work visa nor a retirement visa. I'm here on visa O currently.
I was able to open a bank account and purchase private insurance relatively easily because I had these two forms of official identification issued by the Thai government. If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me.
