Journalist seeks Amsterdam cost-cutting tips

I'm a freelance travel writer doing a piece for The Washington Post on cost-cutting tips for Europe's most expensive cities. I'd appreciate any very specific tips on Amsterdan -- lodging, eating, sightseeing and local transportation. An example: Many bars serve a large-portion dagschotel,or dish of the day, for around $5 less than other meals. Attend free lunchtime concert by the Netherlands Philharmonic, Netherlands Ballet Orchestra and others on Wednesdays from September to June at the Concertgebouw.
