Need advice: From Canada to the Netherlands

Hi there,

My boyfriend and I currently live in Vancouver Canada but are seriously considering moving to the Netherlands. I'm wondering what the process is if we want to live there legally for an extended period of time (ie. for longer than 3 months).

I'm currently in my 2nd year of my 4 year university undergraduate degree, although I'm majoring in Japanese (because I planned to be a translator) which, although it is useful in Vancouver, seems useless in the EU. I suppose this would make it difficult to get a work Visa since my skills don't make me a "desirable" candidate. My boyfriend has 1 year of post-secondary schooling but no degree or diploma, although he is deciding between going back to school for landscape architecture or engineering. I would think this would make him more desirable even though he won't be getting his education at a university.

Anyhow, I have a lot of family in Holland and my mother's parents were both born and raised there before moving to Canada. Would this help me in my application for residency/visa? Also, since my boyfriend and I aren't married yet and he has no family ties to the Netherlands, if I obtained residency/visa, does he have to get a separate one too or is he attached to my documents because we're a couple?

I hope that wasn't too confusing, I'm just having a hard time finding information about Canadian immigration policies; I seem to be finding mostly American information.

Thank you for any help:)!
