Getting to know Abu Dhabi

Hi all, I am currently based in the US and am in the midst of negotiation for a job in Abu Dhabi. However, I have limited exposure to the middle east and would like make some friends here and get to know the country and local customs better before making decision. some of the questions that i have:

1. How safe is the place for a single woman? Do i have to go around in groups to be safe or is it ok for me to go to places (shopping, bookstore and etc) by myself? I heard the crime rate is on the rise, is that true?

2. This question is for US folks in Abu Dhabi - how big is the difference in the cost of living in AD vs say NY/NJ?

3. If i were to move, should i get a car? how is the transportation/public transportation in AD like?

4. This question is also for US folks. comparing the weather, is the heat bearable? (ya, i know this a lame question but I just want to be prepared if I were to roast myself)...=)

5. What kind of lifestyle can you have for say USD4000 a month? I am just trying to find a baseline for benchmarking.
