"western" v local companies

Hi,

I recently received a fairly lucrative offer for a position in Abu Dhabi in the IT industry.

My brother worked in Dubai for many years as an expat, and loved it. My family and I visited him once and loved it too. He was working for a multinational (US) company, and when I told him of the opportunity, he was very excited - "go tomorrow, you'll love it, the kids will love it"!

However, when I mentioned it was a local owned company, not a US/EU multinational - he immediately changed his tune. He called said "no, a thousand times no" - and described a number of professionals he knew who said working for local companies promise the world to get you in, but are a nightmare to work for.

Just looking for additional opinions. Is it a theme over there that it's one thing to work for a multinational, but the local companies have bad reputations? I realize this is very high-level, but I was surprised by his immediate (and quite adamant) change in opinion.
