Commutable to Liverpool St. Station?

I will be relocating to the London area soon, and am looking for a house within commutable (an hour or less would be preferable) distance of the Liverpool St. Station.

I have the book "Commuterland", but would like to hear from anyone who makes the commute daily - what towns do you recommend?

How is the commute from the Cambridge area?

I prefer smaller town/village living, but am curious as to how well I would fit in. (I'm an American, but have lived for the past five years in a small Swiss town, so I've had some experience there...)

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
