Opinions on areas west of London

I was hoping someone could give me some experienced opinions on a couple of questions. I may be relocating to the UK for a job. My company is out near Windsor but being a single person, I think I want to live nearer to the city and commute out. I'm considering somewhere around Chiswick, Ealing, Acton, Kew, Hounslow, etc.

1) Any opinions on the above areas, which are desirable, not desirable, most reasonable, most interesting, etc. Probably could go up to $2500/mo. for rent.

2) I'm not at the beginning of my career and I've already lived abroad so I don't want to make a lot of financial sacrifice for experience. I currently earn around $140K U.S. but with the exchange, am debating what I need to ask for to maintain my living standard. Naturally I recognize that I don't have to live this close to the city. That's my choice. 140 translates to less than 80K pounds. Any opinions here?
