Work Permits - Is there an Answer?

I've been in the UK since end of April. I was told before I came over by the British Consulate that I needed a job and then I could get a work permit. So over I came, was offered a job then ask if I had a work permit. I was told to ring them back when I had one! I've been to a government job counseling office who told me to A) get married, B) go back to school or C) go back to the states as it would be almost impossible for me to get a work permit. I was told that my age was against me and no company would go to bat for me to get a permit. I refuse to go back to the states! I love this country and I'm finally realizing a dream of living here. BUT I have to work! Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideas? I am desperate at this stage and considering taking my kazoo to the tubes to play for money!
