4 year point/visa renewal vs. residency UK

Hi,
my 4 year point is coming up and i've started talking to my employer about "visa renewal". in doing a little research i see that i am eligible for indefinite leave to remain. is this the standard action at the 4 yr point? is there also the option for a renewal for another 4 yr visa? i hold a US PP.

of course for me, the residency option sounds the best as (i believe) it will offer more options in case of redundancy, for example - unemployment benefits, ability to stay and get another job etc. but for the employer, it means i can leave to work anywhere (not planning to). also is there more cost for the employer for the residency? they are taking care of it all. any other tips for the 4 yr point would be appreciated. do employers try to avoid employees getting the indefinite leave? my argument is that yes i can go anywhere to work but it also makes me more settled and "confident" in my living situation and therefore more likely to stay and be happy. for example, i wish to buy a house but would hesitate if in case i lost my job i would be in danger of not being able to stay in the UK.

researched on the web but the info is far from straightforward and i would appreciate to hear your experience.
