Michigan to Kent... what to think about?

My husband and I have both been asked to relocate to Kent with our American company, but on a permanent assignments versus a temporary one. We will both work. We have 2 elementary age children and a cat. Based on most of the forum postings I read, the advice has been on London versus other cities in the UK. Is it appropriate to use London as the comparator for salary and cost of living or should we use specific city data? Will our cat need to be quarantined and for how long? Is there a good website to teach us the dos and don'ts of buying a house, renting, etc to compare to what we are use to - we are moving from Michigan were space is not an issue to the countryside in the UK... Any extra thoughts to get us going on making this decision that aren't necessarily posted on this forum already? If we are considered UK employed versus temporarily working in the UK, who do we pay taxes to?? US and UK? What should we do if we know we will return to the US in the next 5 years or so to work for the same company again?

Thanks for the help!
