Visa information

I am currently working as a business manager in northern California. What I'd like to do is quit my job, sell my house, and move to a quiet place in northern Scotland or England, to work on my photography and writing. Am hoping that with the proceeds from the sale of my house, I'll have enough to live on for at least a year while I get my photography work going full speed. I'd be moving as a "self-employed" person, but have found very little solid information online about visas as such for the UK. Is it true I'd either have to prove I have a million pounds, or have supported myself solely on my photography for at least a year?? (I've needed my "day job" as a business manager in order to pay for my high mortgage). Am desperate for concrete information. The UK is my first choice, but am definintely open to the idea of other European countries.
Has anyone out there moved to the UK (or elsewhere) as a self-employed artist, and if so, how?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. All I want is a quiet place in the countryside where I can hear myself think, and "create".
