I am looking for a bit of clarification on a few issues dealing with Social Security. I found a bit of info on the social security situation for expatriates in the UK. I think what it is saying is that if someone goes to live in the UK for LESS THAN 5 years then they should continue to pay into the US system.

If your employer sends you from one country to work for that employer or an affiliate in the other country for five years or less, you will continue to be covered by your home country and you will be exempt from coverage in the other country. For example, if a U.S. company sends an employee to work for that employer or an affiliate in the United Kingdom for no more than five years, the employer and the employee will continue to pay only U.S. Social Security taxes and will not have to pay in the United Kingdom."
2 Questions:
First Question: I need a bit of clarification of the sentence in the above statement, "if a U.S. company sends an employee to work for that employer or an affiliate in the United Kingdom".
My company is headquartered in the UK, but I work for the US division based out of San Francisco. Is my company considered a UK or US company, or maybe both???
Question 2: Can we opt out of paying into BOTH systems?
I will only be working abroad for 3 5 years so what would happen if I did not pay into the social security in the US for 3 5 years?
