Moving from the US to Bristol

Hi All!

I am looking to move to Bristol for my PhD programme in early September from the US. I would appreciate a lot any tips you could share with us. I and my husband are for example worried about renting a flat and having reliable broadband Internet service there no more than 2 weeks after arrival - he will have to start working remotely 2 weeks after arriving to Bristol. Without having even rented a place, I have no clue how can we actually do that, and it is a must-have for us.

From what we heard it is impractical to make any renting arrangements prior to actually arriving in Bristol. For anyone who was moving to Bristol recently: is this also your experience? Or were you able to pre-arrange something prior to arrival? What should we pay special attention to when looking for a flat to rent?

Can you also give us some advice as far as the NHS is concerned? My husband will continue working for his US-based company while in the UK, I will be doing a PhD. Can we rely on NHS or would you recommend taking out a private health insurance? Also for dental and vision?

Would anyone know, or could point us to some information on tax
situation/liabilities of non-British citizens moving from the US to the UK? We are green card holders in the US. Does the UK-US treaty on preventing double taxation also apply to us?

I would really appreciate any information you could share with us.
